Side Effects of Fenugreek and What Breastfeeding Moms Need to Know!

Mishaun Taylor asked:

If you suffer from low milk supply, you may have heard that fenugreek can help. However, while many articles sing the praises of this herbal supplement, these articles do not always discuss the side effects associated with the use of this herb. In this article, we’ll discuss the side effects of fenugreek.

Fenugreek is used throughout the world as both an herb and a spice. In many Eastern and African countries, fenugreek is used in foods, as an herbal medical treatment, and in hair conditioner. In addition to helping moms increase their milk supply, fenugreek can also be used to treat sinus problems, fight infections, and reduce lung congestion.

You must keep in mind, however, that herbal supplements are not approved by the FDA, and there are very few studies on the long term effects of fenugreek usage. In addition, there are some well known and documented side effects associated with fenugreek usage.

One of the most common side effects of fenugreek usage is a very benign side effect. People who use fenugreek produce sweat and urine that has a maple or curry smell. This is caused by a potent aroma compound called sotolone. While this is not a harmful side effect, it can be an embarrassing side effect. It is also possible that your urine may change color as a result of using elevated amounts of fenugreek. This is also not harmful.

In addition, some people are allergic to fenugreek. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include difficulty in breathing, hives, closing of the throat, and swelling of the tongue, face, or lips. If you suspect that you are having an allergic reaction to fenugreek, call your doctor immediately. Depending on the severity of your reaction, your doctor may send you to the emergency room.

People who take certain medications should only take fenugreek under the direct care of their doctor. If you are taking medications for the treatment of diabetes, do not take fenugreek unless your doctor agrees to this treatment. When taken with these medications, blood sugar levels can drop too low, putting you in medical danger.

There are several other medications that can cause a negative reaction when taken in combination with fenugreek. For this reason, you should make an appointment to discuss taking this supplement with your doctor before you begin using this supplement. This will allow you to make an informed decision.

Breast Enlargement Pump – The Complete Guide to ****** Enlargement Pumps

Karina Sinclair asked:

Women who do not like invasive procedures such as surgery in enhancing their ******* turn to natural, and sometimes, mechanical solutions. The ****** enlargement pump is a device which aims to enlarge a woman’s ****** by stretching the tissues on that area. Its regular use is said to produce visible results in a matter of weeks.

Aside from stretching the breasts’ tissues, manufacturers of these pumps also claim that regular stimulation of the ******* stimulate the release of estrogen. It is the hormone responsible for ****** growth, among other things.

There are a lot of ****** enlargement pumps available in the market today so the question that begs to be answered is if they really work. And if they do, how effective really are they in performing the task that they claim to do?

By looking at the device’s principle, it can be quite hard to imagine producing real results to women who use them. This is especially the case for women who already breastfed their children because at this point, their ******* tend to sag already. Obviously, stretching the ****** tissues further won’t help not only in increasing the ****** size but also on the aesthetic part of it.

But for those who have tried other non-invasive options but still see no results may find the use of ****** pumps worth trying out. However, it would be good to seek a doctor’s advice before using them. It is never too bad to play things safely from time to time.

Medela Swing ****** Pump Review

Amy Walsko asked:

This pump is the best I’ve ever used. Here’s why:

It’s totally portable, so I can take it to work in the nice looking travel bag (which actually doesn’t look TOO much like a ****** pump bag). Even out of the bag, the thing is tiny (easy to toss into a large pocketbook if you needed to).

The Medela 2-Phase Expression Technology is a must have. It feels so natural, and gets more milk than any other pump I’ve used in the past. The speed and suction is completely adjustable and it makes pumping actually kind of enjoyable.

The ****** shield is very comfortable. It’s soft and smaller than most others. There are also only 4 buttons to control the entire pump. It’s ridiculously simple to figure out.

Though I really love it, for the sake of review, there are some things that could be improved upon:
For a single pump, it is a little bit loud. Not ridiculous, but if you need something quite I would recommend a manual pump. It is however quieter than the Pump In Style or the Isis Uno or Duo.

Being a single pump, pumping does take a bit longer. If you need to be done quickly every time a double pump might suit you. I have found though that it pumps quicker on one ****** than a double pump does on one ****** (the double of course, pumps both at the same time, making the whole process faster).

It’s definitely a good investment for light to moderate pumping. Everyday, multiple session pumping may be a bit of a stretch for the tiny pump, but I’m sure it could hold up pretty well (Medela pumps are known to be very durable). I am a huge advocate of it and I’m sure you will be once you try it.

Fenugreek and ****** Feeding: More Milk Production?

Danna Schneider asked:

Fenugreek seed is a medicinal and therapeutic herb whose use dates back to ancient Greece and Rome. The uses of the fenugreek seed were actually quite diverse, but primarily this natural seed was used for an array of “female problems”, including the stimulation of milk production in mothers who were having difficulty producing enough ****** milk to feed their infants.

Fenugreek is still used for this purpose to this day, and you might be surprised to find out how it actually works.

The fenugreek seed is usually taken as a standardized ground mixture that is then encapsulated, and can usually be purchased at a very reasonable price at your local health food store, GNC or other health supplement outlet.

It is actually considered a part of the legume family, like the soybean, and is fairly easy to grow in various areas of the world, hence it’s reasonable price. The dosage per individual may vary, but generally a fairly high dosage is required to spur the milk production adequately.

Fenugreek is purported to work as a milk production enhancing supplement in new moms because it actually stimulates the sweat glands to produce sweat, and your mammary glands are basically just one big modified sweat gland.

It is said that your sweat should start to take on a sweet scent similar to that of maple syrup when the fenugreek is starting to work.

Generally women report a noticeable increase in their milk production within 36-72 hours of taking the fenugreek supplement, and they also notice an engorgement in their *******.

It only works correctly though if both of the ******* are competely emptied out regularly when nursing your infant or pumping.

Many physicians and obstetricians will recommend fenugreek as a natural milk production stimulant, and most of them say the majority of their patients notice a marked improvement in their volume of milk production. However, it does not work on everyone who tries it.

My best friend actually tried fenugreek supplements in large doses, and she said that it did not help her, and she also mentioned that she never noticed the maple syrup smell in her sweat or urine, so perhaps the herb just did not work with her particular bodily chemistry.

As with any other herb or natural supplement, fenugreek may not work the same on every woman, and it may not work at all on some women. It’s unfortunately an exercise in trial and error many times to figure out the right dosage as well as to figure out if it will even work for you.

Fenugreek actually has other therapeutic and medicinal uses as well. There are specific compounds in the fenugreek seed that are actually very beneficial when applied topically to the skin (but these need to be expelled and manipulated professionally).

It also is thought to be beneficial to those with high blood sugar, as it has hypoglycemic properties and can be useful in lowering blood sugar.

Another possible use for fenugreek may be to help lower one’s cholesterol, and also to help thin the mucous since it has been used in the past to help people with asthma to breathe easier with continued therapy.

While there are other therapeutic and medicinal purposes for the fenugreek seed, it’s number one and most well known use is to help women who are ****** feeding, and there’s a reason for that – it actually works.

Infant Eczema – 7 Breastfeeding Principles

Broyde McDonald asked:

Breastfeeding can help your baby avoid contracting eczema. The longer you can breastfeed him the better. This article will talk about 7 breastfeeding principles and how it applies to eczema.

Intestinal protection from allergies

When children are born some assembly is still required, the mothers job of providing nutrients are still not yet complete. A young baby receives from the mother enzymes that prohibits allergens from passing into his bloodstream.

First foods increased chance of eczema

In the place of ****** milk, infants are usually fed cow’s milk. Cow’s milk is known to contain more than a dozen allergy producing poisons. In fact cow’s milk is made up of up to 20 different ingredients that can cause eczema and other allergies.

Immune system not developed to work on its own until 3 months

Your babies’ immune system is for the most part unresponsive when he is very young up until the time he 9 months to a year old. That is the reason they are so susceptible to sicknesses unless they are well taken care of. ****** milk is the agent that is designed to bring the immune system up full functioning ability, and without it, the immune system never reaches its full potential.

Mothers milk provides antibodies

Not only does mothers milk prevent allergens from passing into the blood stream, it also contains antibodies that work against organisms that intend to hurt her child.

If you already have eczema, the flare ups are not as bad

When a child is being breastfed but develops eczema anyway breastfeeding is with good reason believed to make the condition less damaging than if he was not breastfed. If you are breastfeeding and your baby still gets eczema, you must then continue to ****** feed. It is better to continue than to stop.

Signs of it leaving around age 2

People who continue to breastfeed their baby in the face of eczema are finding that by the time their child is about 2 years old, the eczema has shown signs of being reduced. At this time only the hands, feet and face are being affected. These are the last places that eczema affects a person before it goes away for good.

Breast fed through 12 months have a 46% less chance of getting it

Children who have no eczema and are breastfed through their first year of life are discovered in a study among 17,000 people to have had a 46% less chance of getting eczema than those in the study who were not breastfed.

Sterilizing Your Baby’s Milk Bottles

Anne Clarke asked:

Both traditional approaches such as steam sterilizing, cold water sterilizing, and boiling for your baby’s bottles and newer, alternative ways such as microwavable bottles, which are sterilized in a matter of seconds. Every parent should know what the options are so that their baby’s milk bottles are properly sterilized. Therefore, the most important thing to consider is that your baby, whose immune system is definitely not as strong as a child or adult’s, has properly sterilized, germ-free equipment such as bottles and pacifiers. Remember, leaving a sterilized bottle out in the open air for too long can result in the accumulation of more bacteria. Therefore, you can keep a safe (of sorts) for your sterile bottles – this method is preferred if you clean many bottles at a time. Otherwise, you must always clean the bottle with which you will feed your baby very soon before you do so.

Whether you are using a manual ****** pump, an electric ****** pump, or if you are using baby formula, the condition of the bottles you use will be especially important. Do not invite infection. It is an unwelcome and sometimes dangerous visitor for the human body. Because of the lowered immune efficiency of your baby (as with any person with a compromised immune system) sterilization of anything such as plates, cups, spoons, bottles etc. is especially important. Whether you use formula, or store ****** milk from a ****** pump in a bottle, this article will go over the methods of proper bottle and pacifier sterilization for you. There is no one right way to do get it done, as long as the sterilization method (no matter which method) is performed properly. Here are four virtually always one hundred percent effective ways to sterilize a baby’s toys, bottles pacifiers, and more:

If you find yourself in a situation where you have no electricity, or perhaps heating water is not possible, try the cold water sterilization approach. There are special tablets designed especially for you in such circumstances. There will be a specific amount of tablet or solution to use depending on the amount of water. The solution is incredibly effective for completely cleansing the bacteria from your baby’s bottles, pacifiers and other items. Do not undermine the sterilization of your milk bottles, when it concerns milk from formulas, or whether it is ****** milk.

Usually these kinds of tablets and / or solutions are dissolved into water and the baby bottles will be submerged in the solution. This means to check for any air bubbles in the bottles or the ******* to be sure that everything is properly soaked. It can take up to forty minutes to clean bottles this way. Nonetheless, this method really “saves the day” (to steal the expression) when you find yourself in a situation where microwaving, boiling, or steaming your bottles is not possible before bottle feeding.

There are also many convenient kinds of microwave safe baby bottles. Usually to sterilize them is a matter of a quick rinse and scrub, and about ninety seconds in the microwave. This is a great solution almost anywhere you go – but, of course, sometimes other types of sterilization methods will be necessary.

Steam sterilizing equipment is a great way to clean and sterilize your baby’s bottles and / or other items. There are all kinds of electrically operated equipment designed for cleaning germs and removing all bacteria with steam. When you use steam sterilizing there is no smell or taste. Be sure they dry completely before you fill or store them. As with all methods of bottle cleaning – if you clean many bottles at once, you can keep them closed away and fresh for longer periods of time.

Boiling is another, and the forth method of baby bottle sterilization I will mention to you. If you submerge them for at least ten minutes, perhaps more, boiling your baby’s bottles will eliminate any harmful germs and / or toxins. Boiling is a common method of purification, as a matter of fact, one of the oldest and most well-known. It is certainly more antiquated than microwavable, chemical, or electrical devices also used for cleaning bottles every day. Boiling is the oldest, but is nonetheless incredibly effective, method of cleaning bottles. And boiling is as efficient as any of the others combined.

Don’t forget, you need to be sure you have the right bottles! There are both traditional and alternative ways every parent should know so that their baby’s milk bottles are properly sterilized. Whether you are using a manual ****** pump, an electric ****** pump, or if you are using formula, the bottles you use will be especially important. But do not undermine the sterilization of your milk bottles, when it is the milk from baby formulas, or whether it is ****** milk. There is much to remember when you have a new baby – so try especially to keep the most important things in mind.

Breastfeeding Diet – Some Do’s and Don’ts That Make a Difference

Charles Johnson asked:

Breastfeeding is a very special phase of life after pregnancy not just for you but for your baby as well. What you do and what you eat are important for your baby’s wellbeing and development. Therefore, there are several dos and donts that you need to follow regarding a breastfeeding diet. Let me give you a brief insight into the same. However, you must make sure that you consult your lactation consultant or health care professional before making any significant changes in your diet or lifestyle because you can’t take chances with your health during this period.

Do’s

*You should focus on vitamin intake, which can be achieved only through a well balanced diet. Include fruits and vegetables in your diet – they are the best source for all kinds of necessary vitamins. Every day, make it a habit to eat five portions of fruits and vegetables.

*For vitamin C and A, you can include broccoli in your breastfeeding diet.

*If it is winter, a sun bath is a fantastic idea, as it is a great source of vitamin D. However, if it is summer, you obviously cannot go in for a sun bath, so you will have to consider taking Vitamin D through your diet. You can do this effectively by adding ample quantities of oily fish, margarine and dairy products in your diet.

*Minerals are also important during the breastfeeding days. It is important for the mother to get her RDA of minerals such as Selenium, Zinc and Calcium.

*For calcium, you can have milk and related dairy products. Other good sources for calcium may include tahini, spinach, almonds, white bread, tofu, dried figs, calcium enriched soya milk, and sardines.

*In order to fulfill the needs of zinc in your breastfeeding diet, you can rely on certain products such as fish like mackerel and prawns, hard cheese, lentils, whole meal bread, cashew nuts, baked potatoes, sardines, and red meat.

Don’ts

*No alcohol at all. Alcohol intake at this stage may result in the passage of alcohol to your milk. The quantity of alcohol will obviously be very low in milk, but it is extremely harmful for your little one. Your baby needs milk, not alcohol.

*If you can stop taking tea and coffee, it is better. However, if you do want to take it, you are recommended not to take it more than a cup or two a day. Just like alcohol, caffeine can also be passed on to your milk if taken in high quantities. Caffeine is also not considered good for the health of your baby.

*Taking sweeteners like saccharin is very common when the mother is on a breastfeeding diet. However, it is important for you to understand that it can have some harmful long term side effects. Therefore, as a precautionary step, you had better sucralose (Splenda) – it is a safer substitute as calorie-free sugar.

*In order to minimize the exposure to mercury, you are also recommended to restrict the consumption of fish to 340g a week.

*Processed foods should also be avoided, especially those that contain a long list of additives.

*The consumption of peanuts is also not recommended, as it can leave traces of allergens in the ****** milk.

Overall, as we can see there is no special breastfeeding diet. All you need to do is to focus on having a well-balanced diet. However, if you have some doubts and queries regarding your diet in the breastfeeding days, you are recommended to consult your doctor.

Tips On How To Stop Breastfeeding

Robin Cassidy asked:

Sooner or later breastfeeding must come to an end. But what if your baby simply refuses to stop breastfeeding? Many mothers face this problem but a few simple tips can help ease the pain of weaning for both mother and child.

For many mother and their children stopping breastfeeding occurs naturally. The baby starts taking an interest in the food being eaten by others around her and begins to eat solid foods for herself. As the baby eats more solids, the less she wants her mother’s breastmilk. However some children simply refuse to voluntarily stop breastfeeding and many mothers can become upset, tired and at their wits-end as to how to stop breastfeeding altogether. If you’re having problems stopping breastfeeding, then the following tips may be of help.

Avoid going cold turkey. This is usually very upsetting for the child, which in turn causes tantrums. Instead it is better to reduce the number of breastfeeds during the day, perhaps replacing the feed with a bottle or cup of mother’s expressed milk. This gradual reduction of time spent ******* at the ****** will ease the child sense of loss or discomfort, especially if bottle fed with her mother’s ****** milk. Eventually, breastmilk could be replaced with formula.

Many children cry when they wake up in the middle of the night. Usually it is the mother who tries to sooth the baby back to sleep. Unfortunately, this soothing process can mean breastfeeding the child. It might be better if the baby’s father, or some other person, who the child feels secure with, takes care of her. Many mothers will instinctively go to their child if the child is crying, so it might also be a good idea to try to stay out of earshot. The child may take quite some time with this new regime but perseverance is the key. Eventually, when the child has been weaned off these nighttime feeds, the mother can go back to settling the back at night.

With an older child – who is able to talk and understand what is being said – you could begin by putting limits on where and when you breastfeed. Tell her, “We only breastfeed in at naptime and bedtime” or “We only breastfeed when it is dark outside”.
When you are ready to stop entirely, you could simply tell her, “You are a big girl now, and big girls don’t breastfeed”. It is important to remember that with children of this age, the emotional stress caused by stopping breastfeeding can be great. Therefore replace the lack of breastfeeding with more cuddles; replace her emotional dependency on breastfeeding with other physical comforts.

It is also important to take care of your ******* during this time. Any distress or pain felt by the mother will be picked up by the child who will then also feel upset, thus aggravating an already delicate situation. By gradual reduction of breastfeeding you should help ease engorgement of your *******. Your milk supply should gradually decrease. If it doesn’t and your ******* feel uncomfortable, then express your breastmilk- this can be given to your baby in either bottle or cup. Cabbage leaves are known to help reduce engorgement. Crush the cabbage leaves with a rolling pin if the leaves do not accommodate to the shape of your ******. Wrap the cabbage leaves around the ****** and leave on for about 20 minutes. Twice daily is enough. It is usual to use the cabbage leaf treatment two or three times or less. You can use the cabbage leaves after each feeding and leave them on until they wilt.

Natural ****** Enlargement Methods

Anna Hardy asked:

Natural ****** enlargement methods are today preferred over ****** implant surgeries. Like its name suggests, natural ****** enlargement methods are natural and therefore, safer. Also, the processes are non invasive, which reduce the risk of any surgery. The non invasive process also does off with the use of silicone or other such substances being used. Similarly, these natural ****** enlargement methods do not have any side effects.

Some of the main natural ****** enlargement methods in use today are:

1. ****** enlargement pills 2. ****** enlargement lotions, creams and sprays 3. ****** pumps 4. Exercise and ****** Massage 5. Hypnosis

Breast Enlargement Pills

The female gender achieves puberty around the age of ten or twelve. An increased production of hormones like estrogen, progesterone and prolactin stimulate the growth of the cells of the ******.

Breast enlargement pills use the same concept. Mankind has known such herbs which stimulate growth since ages. These herbs are known to increase the bulk of the ****** growth. These herbs contain the plant estrogen, called phytoestrogen. This phytoestrogen has the same function human estrogen has. They stimulate the growth of the adipose tissue, i.e. ******.

Phytoestrogens are found in the following natural herbs:-
- Pueraria mirifica

- Blessed thistle

- Dong Quai

- Saw palmetto

- Fennel seeds

- Fenugreek

- Dandelion root

- Damiana

- Wild Yam

Breast Enlargement Creams, Lotions, Sprays

There are other ****** enlargement creams, lotions and sprays which contain natural ingredients. These ingredients work towards firming the tissues and ligaments of the *******. Further, these creams work as moisturizing cream for the *******. While the creams supply ******* with additional water and moisture, they make the ******* look firmer and livelier.

These ****** enhancement and enlargement herbs and ingredients are available in various forms, like creams, lotions, sprays and pills. Mostly, ****** enlargement pills are used along with the creams, sprays and lotions.

Breast Pumps

Breast pumps are another method of enhancing ****** size. The concept used is the same which is used to remove excess milk from the ******* of a lactating mother; however, these pumps are different in shape and structure.

Breast pumps consist of two cups attached to a vacuum generating device. These cups are meant to be placed over the ******. Pressure is generated when the air is ****** out of the cups, due to the partial vacuum. This pressure enhances the blood circulation in the *******.

Therefore, these pumps enhance the health of the tissues and ligaments within the *******. Further, ****** pumps help in flushing out any toxic materials that settle into the ******* from time to time. This is especially helpful when the woman is lactating.

Exercise and Massaging

We all know that exercise is good for the body. In fact, there are various exercises set for various parts of the body, like the back, the arms and the legs. In the same way, there are various exercises for the enlargement of *******. Apart from such exercises, massages are also very helpful in the enlargement of *******. These exercises are just part of the stay fit regime more and more people are embracing all over the world.

Basically, ****** exercises are aimed at firming up the pectoral muscles below the *******. Once the pectoral muscles become firmer, the ****** tissues follow suit, which make the ****** tissues stronger and suppler.

Therefore, ****** enlargement exercises are chest expansion exercises. These exercises are part and parcel of an athlete’s life. Along with these exercises, women use yoga to enhance their physical as well as mental state of life. ****** massages are easy, and don’t require any special equipment. These massages consist of different pressures applied on the ******* a set pattern. ****** massages provide better circulation of blood in the breast, and flush out any dangerous toxins that may collect.

Hypnosis

Perhaps the most conventional method of ****** enhancement is hypnosis. In this process, the woman actually doesn’t undergo any surgery, nor does she take any medicine – natural or otherwise. It is a known fact that hypnosis can be used to make a person believe some things. Using the same logic, the woman is hypnotized into thinking that the natural size of her ******* is good enough.

Therefore, the woman feels satisfied with herself – which may have a positive stimulation of the correct hormones and facilitate the growth of the adipose tissue.

Cynics maintain that hypnosis is not a ****** enhancement technique at all, and have also criticized the morality of making a person believe something that is simply not true.

There are various other methods of ****** augmentation and enhancement. More women are today opting for these methods. Some of the main reasons for this are:

1. These options are relatively safe. 2. There seem to be no side effects. 3. The woman doesn’t have to undergo any surgery.

A Hospital ****** Pump at Home?

Jennifer Lynn Hanson asked:

You had just given birth and were feeling fantastic. Sure, your body and mind were tired and you were probably a little sore but overall you were feeling fantastic because you finally got to meet that little one you had been carrying around for nine months. The nurses were fantastic and you were able to use the hospital ****** pump that they had there to start your milk flow. It worked amazing and now that you are home and in need of a ****** pump of your own, you are wondering if it’s possible to buy a hospital ****** pump for yourself.

The answer is yes, absolutely. In fact, many of the top brands including Medela make hospital grade pumps and sell them to the public. Examples of the Medela hospital grade ones are the Symphony and the Lactina. They work exceptionally well and are very fast.

There are two main problems with these types of pumps, however. One, they are very expensive. Many moms have a hard time justifying the cost – especially with the new expenses that come along with the birth of a new baby. Second, many women complain that after daily usage of these pumps, they become uncomfortable and the ****** cups can irritate the skin. Comfort is not as big a priority in the hospital grades as it is for personal pumps.

A good solution is to find a good, reputable personal ****** pump. They have made tremendous strides in the technology and durability of these pumps and several of the top selling brands rival the ones they use in hospitals.
